From Bryony

Dear Mrs Lee,

I have been working very hard at home. I have used my imagination to design and make a pirate ship! I drew a picture, coloured it in and labelled it with the recycled resources I would use. We did an experiment with different recycled items and looked at how different objects float and sink before deciding the best resource to use! I discovered that cardboard would not be good, we also tried a strawberry punnet container but it had holes in and didn’t work either. I think I found the perfect container, I was excited to see whether it would float once I had made my pirate ship! I spent almost all day creating my pirate ship using glue, sticky tape and paint. I really enjoyed this! I painted the inside of my pirate ship and plank black, cut out a ragged flag, made a treasure chest and crows nest too. I made the bunting with ribbon and coloured paper, I cut lots of triangle shapes. Once the paint was dry I tested the pirate ship out in the bath......it floats!
From Bryony 1LL

Hi Bryony,

From your detailed planning to carefully choosing all the right materials and details to make your ship, you've done a fantastic job! Your pirate ship looks amazing and floats brilliantly! Well done Bryony!

Hello,
I realised it has been a while since we gave an update about Aman. He has been regularly doing his doodles.
Last week he achieve 500 day streak in doodle maths.
He has been doing a few simple experiments like Turing water in solid ice by keeping it in freezer, he has been so excited that he kept his toy ducks in a water bowl and froze them.
He has been helping mum in the garden and has been watering and keeping an eye on his strawberry plants which have started to flower. He is hoping by his bday there would be strawberries. Aman loves ice creams, but mum says let’s wait till proper summer. Aman being experimental and excited took an ice cream cone(kept for summer ice cream treats) poured 2 big dollops of yogurt and big chunk of cheese and relished it.
He has also taken it up on him to bathe his cuddly doggies soft toy.
Aman has been practicing handwriting and is being encouraged to be neater and clearer.
He was talking to his dad about sprouts and so he has kept green pulses in water and will wait for it to sprout and then may be he might plant it.
Hope everyone is doing fine and is safe.
With love from Aman

Hello Aman,

I'm pleased to hear that you have been spending so much time enjoying your garden, watching and caring for things that grow.  Be sure to have a look at our new Summer 1 project overview for more activities to help you explore plants and trees.  It sounds like you have been having lots of fun at home with mum and dad - your youghurty ice-cream cone sounds delicious!

A really big well done for your Doodle streak too!  What a brilliant achievement.yes

Look forward to hearing from you again soon.

General Query
Just a query if you could recommend any work books? Ideally just something to cover the basics (Maths, English etc).
Trying to keep ____ off of relying on screens and we have filled the books I had bought previously!!
Thank you

I think this is a common theme in many households at the moment!  In school, the only scheme we use regularly is Maths No Problem.  That said, there are many brands of workbooks for maths and English readily available online and in supermarkets at the moment.  As long as you check the recommended age, they should be broadly structured around the objectives we have learned in school.

Do keep on visiting our Working at Home page for things to do daily and keep on doodling regularly. Keep an eye out for our new scheme of work for Summer 1, which will be up and running on our class page at the end of the Easter Holidays. It will have lots of key questions and recommended areas of study for your children to explore in the coming weeks.

Sounds like you had a great birthday too Teagan!

From Bethany

Hi Mrs Hannibal

I have been very busy decorating the window for other people to enjoy on their walk, do you like it?

I have also been playing hide and seek maths and spelling, mummy hides the answers around the house and garden. I have to work out the answer then run around and find the correct card. My sister has been joining in too with easier words and sums, this means we can race.

I want to be a doctor when i grow up so i have been busy learning about the body, we drew around each other and then labelled different parts.

We have been really busy doing work, i have nearly finished my common exception work book. Mummy is very impressed.

Hi Bethany,

Your window decorations are beautiful. I bet they make everyone who walks past your house smile and feel happy! Well done for working hard on your maths and spellings this week and great to hear that you are growing your brain in science too! Keep up the good work!

A Doodlemaths query;

I’m having some trouble with DoodleMaths. The questions have moved on to adding the units first and then the tens e.g. 5 + 13 is then 5 + 3 + 10. Have they learnt this in class yet?

Yes we have covered this in class with the children in our Maths No Problem lessons.  The main method we have been using is to;

  • Partition the larger number into tens and ones (ie 10 + 3)
  • Add the ones from the large number to the small number (3 + 5 = 8)
  • Add the ten from the large number (8 + 10 = 18)

We have been using practical resources and pictures to help us.

When using practical resources we have been asking the children to make a group of ten and then count up the ones. They should then have a ten and some ones to make the new number.

When using pictures we have been asking the children to circle a group of ten and then count up the ones.  They should then have a ten and some ones to make the new number.

I have added a Maths No Problem picture below to help explain - hope this helps.

Happy Doodling!

From Aman

He has made the below picture. He has been doing his doodles regularly and has been watching videos on bbcbitesize - geography and science. He has been playing with mum and dad lots of ball games like catch, football and cricket. He has been keeping his parents busy by playing board games and colouring as well. He is asking about his teachers, how are they and what is their routine like?

Hi Aman,

Lovely to see you have been working hard at home. Thank you for sharing your pictures. Good job on keeping up with the sports too! Thank you for asking Aman, us teachers are all well. Some days we go to school and look after the key workers' children and some days we work from home. We also do home school with our children so that keeps us busy too! I live near the beach so I like to start my morning early with a beach walk with my children. Then we do our school work and maybe a bit of art or music. We also like to play out in the garden, read books, play board games like you (what's your favourite?) and watch movies. Keep up the good work Aman!

From Bethany

Dear Mrs Hannibal,

Bethany has been working hard doing her doodles, creative writing, playing some hide and seek maths and english games, with Amelia joining in with some slightly easier ones.

They also both followed Mrs Lee’s rainbow tutorial and have put them up in the windows.

They listened to the 2 stories from the Muscliff website that have been read by the teachers and also enjoyed the phonics fun.

They’ve been keeping up with Joe Wicks and Bethany has already done her homework that he set to come up with her own exercise routine, which she is going to send to him.

The weather has been great which has helped make this an enjoyable week of home school but Bethany is missing you and her friends.

Dear Bethany,

I'm missing you and all of 1NH too. Great to hear you have been busy and working hard on your jobs. Fantastic news about Joe Wicks too. Maybe next week we will be working out to your exercise routine!

From Elsie

Hi,

We hope your all well. On top of doing her doodles, twinkle work sheets, IXL programme and lots of jumping on the trampoline.
Elsie and her sister have decided to travel the world virtually choosing a different country each week, this week we explored Africa we used Google maps to travel there and then explore our surroundings once there we went onto YouTube and found some videos about Victoria Falls,  kilamanjiro and the Sahara desert and pretended we were on a safari and even had a tiger join us for lunch one day.
We used art hub one day to guide us on how to draw an elephant which Elsie did all by herself fab effort I think?
Elsie also practised her cutting skills once she had coloured in her mandala and practised her hand writing whilst writing down some fun facts that she has learnt about Africa.
We completed our week by watching the lion king!
We also played Bingo which has been helping Elsie with her number recognition.

The girls can't wait to visit Spain next week and anywhere else we may stop on the way.

Hi Elsie, what a great idea to explore a different part of the world each week! Sounds like you have learned lots of interesting things about Africa this week. We can't wait to hear what you discover about Spain. I wonder if you'll learn any Spanish...Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Leyton made his rainbow today and a nest with eggs in it out of modeling clay. He is being very good with homeschooling.

Hope your all staying well, we will email more another day.

Hi Leyton, I miss you too! I'm super impressed with your Pepper Boy. He looks like he's right out of a Sue Hendra book! Fantastic work! Lovely to see all your creative work - keep it up!

This looks amazing girls! Thank you for sending us the pictures. Your shop/café looks full of joy and happiness. We’re super impressed with your designing skills.
